What is SOPA?

And why all the fuss?

Essentially, the “Stop Online Piracy Act” was passed in 2011 to expand the ability of the US Department of Justice and copyright holders to fight online piracy and the trafficking of counterfeit goods (like free music downloads and certain fake pharmaceuticals that urge you to seek medical attention after four hours).  Sounds like a good thing, right?

Well, sure. As a copyright holder myself I’d rather not see my creative works bandied about on those Korean sites that – surprise – don’t pay royalties. However, it means much more to those in the Wide World of Web. “The Extreme’s” cite possible shutdowns of popular user-content based sites like YouTube, Twitter, and even search sites that might inadvertently post links to the offending hooligans. “The Corporate Types” fear the costs and liabilities associated with self-policing their properties.  Meanwhile, this is the internet. An offender can probably be back in business in a few short hours under a different name and a new website.

As is often the case with well-meaning legislation come implementation time, the questions that should have been asked in the beginning start to pop up. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks, and perhaps, years.

So the question remains: will the government ‘clean up’ with SOPA, or will opponents ‘rope’ in SOPA? Just hope they don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater!

Is Your Site Getting Hits This Holiday?

If a tree falls in the woods but nobody hears it, does it make a sound?

The real question should be: if a website has great content and important information, but nobody finds it, does it make a difference?

Most businesses realize the importance of timely, accurate, and interesting content for their website, but many don’t actually take the time to see how their site performs, and, subsequently, if their content is seeing the light of day  …er… computer screens. There are easy ways to learn about two important “V’s” in web world: visitors and visibility.

Search Thyself

Want to know how you are viewed on the web? Then search thyself! Search your company, your competitors, even yourself. Where are you in the results? Are you on the first page or lost in the nether region? What about your reputation?  Has someone posted a negative review of your business? Or, worse yet, has that picture from the office party made it onto someone’s social network account? Those results can help you develop an effective web strategy and get in the game!

Batter Up!

Prepare your site before stepping up to the ‘virtual plate’. Just like a baseball player needs quick reflexes, good eyes, speed, and muscle, you’ll need tools to make sure your site is ready to perform.  Why? You both need hits to win! Good content and a site that is optimized are a must. This very deliberate process is called SEO, or search engine optimization.  Web analytics are the way to keep score (and find out about your visitors). It won’t hurt to have a good third base coach (say a certain web, media, and marketing company!) to guide you along the way. And, unlike an athlete, you can “juice” your performance by adding some well planned internet marketing too!

The first question of the New Year should be: ‘Has your site been optimized to get the most hits possible’?

Hurricane Irene Service Interruptions at SPARKS!

Earthquakes in Maryland? Hurricanes in Baltimore? What next – locusts and frogs?

While we are pleased to say that all of our clients’ sites and services remained up-and-running through the recent weather-related interruptions, our good ol’ phone and internet was off at SPARKS! headquarters as a result of Irene’s unwelcome visit. Alas, all is back to normal today so keep those calls and emails coming!

Unlike many of our fellow Marylanders, SPARKS! emerged unscathed by Irene (and our physical impression of that OTHER city by the Bay) aside from this issue. We hope the best for all who were affected by more serious things.

SPARKS! Makes Music? Greg Pierce releases “Sea Notes”

All right – you knew about our flashy web services and top-notch marketing, but did you know we could carry a tune, too?

Our very own Greg Pierce,  in a collaboration with The National Aquarium in Baltimore, just released “Sea Notes”, a CD of original music to help raise funds for the Aquarium’s Guardian Angel Society.  Greg composed the music for the “Jellies: Ocean Out Of Balance” exhibit at the Aquarium, and the new CD contains the soundtrack along with other instrumentals inspired by the waters of the world.  The disc and CD package also contain photographs by hometown photographer David Simpson, all designed beautifully be local artist & designer John Burk.  Simpson’s gorgeous cover photo is also available as a poster print as well.

Although the new website hasn’t yet launched (really? go figure…), the CD and poster are available at www.SeaNotesMusic.com, the Aquarium gift shop, Greetings And Readings (in Hunt Valley) and other local retailers. Plus, you can download the MP3′s at iTunes, Amazon.com, and CDBaby.  A portion of the profits will be donated to the Aquarium’s Guardian Angel Society to provide free tickets for our friends in the military as well as the underserved and terminally-ill members of our community.

Give it a listen!

Make That “Call To ACTION”

Call To Action – a website essential!

In the world of websites, a call to action refers to a desired action (or actions) by the website viewer: call, buy now, register for a newsletter, subscribe, or donate, as examples. Well-designed calls to action can lend focus to a website, help direct viewers’ attention, and measure the effectiveness of web pages.

To encourage viewer action, consider offering incentives such as free gifts, a discount, or opportunity to enter a contest.  Urgent language provides further encouragement, such as “for a limited time”, “while supplies last”, or “before prices go up”.  Consider a call to action that identifies a problem and presents a solution, such as “Thinking of remodeling? – click here to get a free quote”, or “click here to see examples of our work”.

Calls to action can be clickable buttons (which can be measured in website statistics) or highlighted areas of static text, such as “Call Now” and a phone number.  Visually, a call to action is most effective when placed near the top of the webpage. The color should be in contrast to the surrounding webpage colors.  Leave enough space around the call to action graphic to allow the eye to focus, and make the button or graphic big, but not too big, which can overwhelm the surrounding webpage content.

Each page of a site should include a call to action, and a site can include more than one. Too many calls to action, however, may dilute your message or confuse viewers.

Want to add a call to action to your site?  ACT NOW! DON’T DELAY! Operators are standing by!

Charitable Events: Making Them a Win-Win

Everyone has their hand out these days – including us!  With so many of our clients in the non-profit sector, we often become involved in soliciting donations, selling tickets, or attending events to raise money for a wide variety of wonderful causes.  Of course the inherent benefit of “doing good” is obvious, but as a marketing firm, we also are not shy about asking, “What’s in it for us?” – or for our clients.

Example: A SPARKS! client of four years, Valleybrook Country Club, hosts a Lazy River Duck Derby to benefit the American Red Cross of Harford County.  Of course, they are thrilled to raise money for a charity that maintains our nation’s blood support, provides disaster relief all over the world, and helps military families locally – but that is not the only reason we suggested it as part of their strategic marketing plan.  We also love the free publicity, including an upcoming article in The Sun, multiple feature stories in local magazines, and oh yeah, 500 potential members coming to the club and seeing first hand what a beautiful place it is!

So why not buy a ticket for the Lazy River Duck Derby on May 21st from 12-4 PM?  Great day out with the  family…ingratiate yourself  with Valleybrook and the Red Cross Board Members…win one of 3 fabulous prizes…Hob-Nob with numerous influential businesses attending and sponsoring the event…check out a great location and get ideas for your own charity event…and finally – support the Harford County American Red Cross!

So with that said, with which charities will your business become involved?  How are you using it to your advantage?

Make it a win-win/win-win situation!

Soaring with Eagles (Scouts, that is!)

SPARKS! has been very busy this year – so much that our dear ol’ Launchpad was gathering a few cobwebs.  Well, we’re not practicing what we preach about website marketing so we figured we better get ourselves back in gear!

We have lots of exciting things to tell you about in the coming weeks – not just about us, but about some of our great clients as well.  We like to call them, SPARKS! Plugs (too much, eh?).

One client in particular has been flying high, so to speak.  EagleInternship.com was done for the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Our friends over there have a great program matching Eagle Scouts with internship opportunities at companies in the greater Baltimore area.  Be sure to check it out, and keep them in mind if your company would benefit by partnering with the leaders of tomorrow.

Back to the grind for now, but more to come soon. Stay tuned!
