Cyber deals are everywhere! Use these tips for safe online shopping this holiday season!
1. Avoid Phishing
No, phishing has nothing to do with your favorite jam band. Phishing occurs when fraudsters create a fake site, send out a link, and victims type in their personal information which is then sent to the fraudsters.
Ensure pages that require your personal information are legitimate by making sure the web address in the bar matches the site that you are visiting.
2. Beware of “Free” Wi-Fi!
When typing in personal information, be sure to be on a private Wi-Fi network. Hackers can easily and often use free Wi-Fi networks to steal your personal info. Use only secure networks, or install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) app on your device to encrypt your data and hide your IP address when you’re on a public network.
3. Use HTTPS:// For Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
HTTPS = Encrypted, Secure Data Transfer. Make sure the links in your web address bar begin with HTTPS:// and show an image of a lock before link.
4. Make Sure The Site Has a Secure Seal of Approval.
There are a number of SSL issuers, here is one example:
5. Use a Dedicated Credit Card
Dedicate a separate credit card for all of your online transfers. That way if something does go wrong, it does not affect your regular card.
6. Use (or get!) a P.O Box
Don’t use your real address for online transfers. When making purchases online, have packages delivered to a P.O. box so hackers don’t get your real address.
